Course Title: Sweet Power: Sugar, Empires, and Slaves in the Caribbean Credit Hours: 6 Dates of the Course: 14 May - 4 June 2008 Instructors: Dr. Steven Reschly Course Description: Sweet Power is a three-week, six-credit, Study Abroad course. The class will take place in Curaçao (Dutch slave trade), and Barbados (English sugar plantation system). The Caribbean is an amalgam of five continents: Africa, Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. It is an archipelago of the world’s cultures, mixed and remixed by time, economics, and power. Studying the historic and contemporary Caribbean is a route toward greater understanding of world history. This year's program will take students to Brussels, Belgium; to Paris, Lyon and Nice, France; to Barcelona and Madrid, Spain. For more information, please contact Dr. Lin or Ms. Poyner Course Title: Natural History of Belize Credit Hours: 3 Dates of the Course: May 14 – May 31, 2008 Instructors: Dr. Jon Gering, Dr. George Shinn Course Description: This course emphasizes the diversity of terrestrial and aquatic organisms of Belize, including identification, adaptations, and ecological interactions. The overall goal is to expose students to a broad variety of Belizean ecosystems, and compare the diversity and adaptations of plants and animals living in these ecosystems. For more information, please contact Dr. Gering or Dr. Shinn Course Title: Nursing Experience in the Philippines and Transcultural Experience in the PhilippinesCredit Hours: 5 Dates of the Course: May 16- June 8, 2008 Instructors: Prof. Mariquit Hadwiger and Dr. Stephen Hadwiger Course Description: This Nursing Experience course will be conducted in the Philippines and will focus on the nursing practice, health care systems, and baccalaureate nursing education in the Philippines. The Transcultural Experience in the Philippines will also be conducted in the Philippines and will focus on cross-cultural differences between the students' culture and the Philippine culture. The specific context of culture will focus on communication patterns and health care systems in the Philippines. For More Information, please contact Prof. Hadwiger Course Title: Summer Study Abroad in Avignon, FranceCredit Hours: 6 Dates of the Course: June 14- July 26, 2008 Instructor: Dr. Patrick Lobert Course Description: This 6-week program provides instruction in French language, literature (emphasis on theater) and culture offered jointly by a Truman state University faculty member and the faculty of the Institute for American Universities in Avignon, France. The program is aimed at French students who will have completed at least Intermediate French II or fourth semester French. In addition to taking courses at the Institute for American Universities, students will participate in everyday French life by living with a family, engaging in group cultural activities and taking 2 excursions to various parts of the Provence region. Credit Hours: 3Dates of the Course: June 2008 (Exact dates pending) Instructor: Dr. Scott Burt and Dr. Pete Goldman Course Description: This is a 2-week course aimed at individuals passionate about wildlife and who wish to become part of conservation in action. Wildlife management has become an accepted and necessary part of wildlife conservation. This type of work requires specialized training and experience, which the students will receive through this wildlife capture course. This course involves preparatory seminars at Truman State University and culminates in a 9 day hands-on course taught by a team of veterinarians and game management specialists of Parawild Safari, operating in the Northern and Mpumalanga Provinces of South Africa near the town of Hoedspruit which is about 450 kilometers north-east of Johannesburg, and about 60 kilometers west of Kruger National Park. At least one year of college level Spanish is required. Students live in a Spanish speaking country and society where they can learn about diverse aspects of the culture and at the same time develop their language skills. They also learn how the traditional Latin American culture and values are used in daily living through contact with people and institutions representing various segments of society. For More Information, please contact Professor Vera Piper Course Title: Summer Study Abroad in Salamanca, SpainCredit Hours: 12 Dates of the Course: May 13 - July 6, 2008 (tentative dates) Instructor: Dr. Silvia Pites Course Description: This is a 12 credit Spanish language and culture program held at Academia Mester in Salamanca, Spain. In addition to daily class work students are immersed in the native culture by living with a host family, by taking part in the many group activities. In addition to the six weeks of instruction in Salamanca, the program includes ten days of instructional touring in Catalonia, Castile, and Andalusia, plus three local cultural visits and two all day weekend trips. For More Information, please contact Dr. Silvia Pites Course Title: The Afro-Brazilian Music of BahiaCredit Hours: 3 Dates of the Course: June 8 - June 30, 2008 Instructor: Dr. Marc Rice Course Description: This course examines the music of Bahia, the center of Afro Brazilian culture. Located in Brazil's Northeast coast, Bahia was the focus of South America's slave trade. This history has left a dynamic legacy of music that survives to this day. Through in-class lectures and field trips to museums, musical performances, and other cultural activities, students will have first hand experience with Candomble rituals, Capoeira classes, samba dancing, and modern popular music within their social contexts. They will also acquire the tools of musical analysis so that they can examine specific musical repertories, in order to trace the musical development of these genres. For More Information, please contact Dr. Marc Rice Course Title: China Summer StudyCredit Hours: 6-7 Dates of the Course: May 26 - June 29, 2008 Instructors: Prof. Julie Minn Course Description: A five week program providing language and culture instruction at Shanghai University in Shanghai, China. Students may participate without prior knowledge of Chinese. Language courses will be offered at all levels. The program will be taught by a Truman State faculty member and professors of Shanghai University. The students will take field trips, visit museums and historic sites in and near Shanghai. During the first week of the program students will visit the capital of China: Beijing. This includes a visit of the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the great Wall.
